Jewelry trends come and go; therefore, I get a little cagey about spending too much on the latest shiny sparkly.  Thanks to places like Bauble Bar, of-the-moment pieces are affordable and dare I say, reinventable?  Is that even a word?!  Lately, I have taken a liking to all-black jewelry.  Uncertain with how I often I would wear this look, I decided to DIY by experimenting on an existing necklace.

Consider J. Crew’s black coated stone statement necklace as the inspiration.  I loved the monochrome look and matte finish, but wondered if I could achieve a similar look and feel with spray paint.  Warning…this is not for the faint of heart, aka anyone already appalled at my suggestion of spray paint.

Find a low-cost necklace that you no longer wear and transform it into something new that you’ll love again with a coat of black spray paint.  There is always a slight chance that you won’t like outcome so be sure to try this on something you won’t miss.  Apply a white primer coat using short and even strokes.  Let it dry and set overnight.  Next, apply a black spray paint in a flat finish using the same short stroke method to avoid clumping and to ensure even coverage.  Let it dry and then repeat on the other side.

Voila!  For about $6 you can turn something old into a bold monochromatic statement.  I think I even like it better than the original necklace.
