Hello, my name is Elaine and I am addicted to eye liner.  In my life long search for well defined eyes, black eye liner and I have been best pals since high school. Unfortunately, it has been known to turn on me from time to time.  For example, I’ll line my eyes in the morning looking put together only to find the dreaded raccoon look by midday.  I have experimented with different brands and formulas that claim to be waterproof or smudge-proof but haven’t found that single silver bullet.  The good news though is that through a combination of products, I seemed to have found an approach that has allowed me and my eyeliner to kiss and make-up.

I choose to use a combination of pencil and liquid liner.  I love the texture that a pencil  gives me and the staying power of liquid. Here are the steps I follow:

Step 1. Prime eyes with an eye lid primer, BB cream, or concealer.  It helps the staying power of not only your eye liner but also the rest of your eye makeup.

Step 2. Line the top lid and the bottom corner of the eye with a pencil liner.  I like using Smashbox for everyday wear and Urban Decay for a more dramatic evening look.

Step 3. Smudge the pencil liner with a make-up brush, ensuring even coverage.  Clean up the ends with a cotton swab.

Step 4. Go over the smudged liner with liquid liner, like tracing a line (both top and bottom corner).  This “locks” in the pencil look and keeps it in place.  Again, clean up any mistakes with a cotton swab. For liquid liners, I like using Lancome or Eyeko.

Step 5. Finish up with mascara.

Voila!  All done.  What are your must-have make-up items?  Share here or on Facebook.

  1. This is such a pretty look, you’ve really mastered the art of liquid liner (I need way more practice with that one). I’m a huge fan of Smashbox’s eye products – their Under Eye Brightener is brilliant. And for mascara I love Kevyn Aucoin for no smudges or flakiness, and also Benefit’s They’re Real. x

    1. The liquid eye liner skill comes from me starting with a way too over dramatic cat eye in high school and slowly dialed it down over the years 🙂 Thanks for the suggestions on the other brands, I always like to try the new stuff! xo

  2. Nicely done! I usually opt for pencil which I seem to be able to control much better. I recently spotted a Stila liquid liner in indigo though that I am keen to try out. I will follow your tips for sure! I found a new blog to follow – yay! x d
