The phrase “I don’t know what to pack!” is almost as bad as staring in your closet and saying “I don’t have anything to wear!” Travel can be exciting but it’s also pressure to choose and commit to outfits which can cause one to over pack (hello, checked baggage weight limit). After years of traveling for work, I have honed in on the art of packing lightly while maintaining flexibility.

The key to success is separates. Pack staples that can be worn on repeat, like a pair of jeans and a structured tote (to fit those books and snacks for the flights) and create multiple outfits by mixing and matching tops and accessories. Here’s how to choose those versatile pieces.

Choose neutrals with pattern and texture like a checked shirt, spotted flats, and black leather. Black, white, and grays go with more things while pattern can give an outfit more character. If you absolutely must have color, then choose other pieces in the same color family. Next, add a “statement” piece to your packing list to give you travel outfits some pizzazz. Now statement doesn’t mean it has to be fancy, its purpose is to provide contrast with the rest of your outfit. This could be a cobalt blue cardigan or a large cuff bracelet (or both!).

Lastly, choose footwear wisely. I can’t tell you how many times I think I can make it in a wedge or a bootie and end up regretting it.  Flats are a must and as a bonus, they are light and easy to pack. Choose a pattern like leopard, remember it’s  a neutral, to keep it interesting.  Every woman should own a pair of leopard flats!

  1. This is incredibly timely, seeing as I’m heading to Cuba on Friday! However, the dress code there is a little more ‘anything goes’ but…a girl still wants to have some style. Great tips! I also love that Zara jacket – I’m having more than a little difficulty finding a nice black faux leather jacket that I like!

  2. Love this post and LOOOOVE that bike top! Work travel definitely helps hone down on how to get it right… except for shoes, I can never eliminate shoe options!

  3. Such great tips here, Elaine! I also agree with taking separates – they make me feel like I have more wardrobe options than I really do. And a pair of pointed flats work for almost every occasion. PS Your blue cardigan is the perfect shade on you! x

  4. I love both looks and I couldn’t agree more, great tips! I always seem to pack wedges and never actually wear them. I think I just ordered those jeans I hope they look that good on me! 🙂
